Dartmoor Tors

There are a lot of tors on Dartmoor and to many people they give one of the most characteristic features of the moor. Tors are more numerous on the northern moor. They come in many different shapes and sizes although most consist of striated granite. Some like Great Mistor and Great Links are huge, cyclopean and imposing. Others like Arch Tor and Flat Tor are rather small and nondescript. Some are avenue tors where two or more piles of granite are separated by a lawn of turf. Others are dome shaped with comparatively little erosion. Some have debris fields (or clitter) that litter the hillsides below. A few have no names at all.
Here are photos of some of them. There are some outcrops (like Hangingstone or Puper's Hill) which despite their tor-like features are not called tors. So they haven't been included.

Arch Tor. - SX 633782 - one of Dartmoor's smallest tors.
Bag Tor - SX 763757.
Beardown Tor - SX 604778. A view of one of the stacks of Beardown Tor and looking over towards Lydford Tor.
Bellever Tor - SX 645765 and bang in the centre of Dartmoor. A large tor that is popular with walkers and tourists. Very near a main road and in clear weather there are excellent views over southern Dartmoor.
Belstone Tor - SX 614921
Black Tor (SX 573718) with its characteristic logan stone.
Black Tor (SX 566895) in the Okement valley. Fordland's Ledge is just on the left background.
Black Tor (SX 681635) above the Avon valley with the slopes of Zeal Hill in the background. There's lots of clitter around the southern side of this tor.
Blackingstone Tor - SX 787856. A very accessible tor with splendid views from the top.
Bonehill Tor (SX 730775). A pretty solid sort of tor.
boulters
Boulter's Tor - SX 525781. Part of this tor lies in farmland.
Branscombe's Loaf (SX 552891) with High Wilhays on the horizon. The name comes from an old Dartmoor yarn that involves an old Bishop of Exeter (Walter Bronescombe) and the devil.
Brat Tor (SX 540855) with the Widgery Cross on top of it.
Chat Tor at SX 556853. This is an isolated tor that breaks into the otherwise flat plateau of Rattlebrook Hill.
Chinkwell Tor (SX 728781) - a very popular tor that is easy to walk to from the carpark.
Combeshead Tor - SX 588688. Sheeps Tor and Burrator reservoir are in the background.
Combestone Tor - (SX 670718). This tor is beside one of the moor's main roads and is very popular to visit. Yartor Down in the background.
One of the Conies Down Tors - SX 589791
Cox Tor (SX 532762). This is a large tor with good views over west Devon and Cornwall. A 5 minute walk from one of the main roads through Dartmoor. Made of metamorphic greenstone - not granite.
Looking west from Cramber Tor (SX 584712). Leather Tor and Burrator reservoir are behind.
Crockern Tor - SX 616758. This is where the Dartmoor Stannary parliament met on odd occasions between 1494 and 1743. Crockern is pretty well in the centre of the moor and so it was a convenient place for the parties to meet in the open air.
Crow Tor - SX 607788. On closer inspection this tor is clearly very popular with sheep.
An unnamed tor near Devil's Tor (SX 597794).
Devil's Tor with its rather undemonstrative rocks. SX 597797.
Dinger Tor (SX 586881).
Doe Tor - SX 542848
Down Tor from the west - SX 580694.
Lower Dunnagoat Tor - SX 558864. The beautiful view over Lower Dunnagoat and the Rattlebrook valley from Higher Dunnagoat. The word Dunnagoat may derive from the Celtic words dun (or hill) and coed (or wood).
Easdon Tor (SX 730823) with its triangulation pillar of 439m. Part of this tor is known as Whooping Rock. Some say this was where children were brought to be near sheep - an old cure for whooping cough. Another explanation is the noise that the wind used to make through a now disturbed logan rock.
East Mill Tor (SX 599898). A large tor with good views over the most northern edge of high Dartmoor. Easily approached from the military road from Okehampton.
Eastern Tor - SX 584664. In the background are some of the earthworks of Hentor warren.
Feather Tor (SX 535741). A bland sort of tor that is near Pu Tor.
Flat Tor - SX 609817 - looking south from this diminutive and isolated tor. On the left is Wildbanks Hill and on the right is the distinctive shape of Rough Tor. The West Dart flows down between these two hills. This tor is not easy to get to.
Fox Tor - SX 626698.
Fur Tor - SX 589830 - the main rock stack. One of the most isolated places in Dartmoor and one of the most imposing too.
Ger Tor - SX 547831 - with Standon Hill in the background. This tor has a fantastic view over the Tavy valley near Tavy Cleave.
Great Kneeset (SX 589859) and the NW view over the West Ockment valley.
Great Links Tor and one of its barrel like blocks - SX 552867. This commanding tor has superb views over Devon and Cornwall.

greator
A view of Grea Tor Rocks at SX 748787. Near Hound Tor.

Gutter Tor - SX 578669.
Hameldown Tor - SX 703806. A north facing winter view.
Hangershell Rock - SX 655594. This isolated piece of granite on the southern plateau near Butterdon Hill is clearly a tor in spirit if not in name. In the 15th century this was known as Hanger's shiel. Shiel can mean shelter.
Hare Tor - SX 551843. A westward view.
Hart Tor at SX 581720.
Hartland Tor (SX 641799). A 20 minute walk away from Postbridge.
Lower Hartor - SX 603675. This attractive tor is surrounded by the fairly featureless upper Plym landscape
Higher Hartor - SX 600677
Heckwood Tor at SX 538737. There was a small quarry at Heckwood which was used to get some of the blocks needed for the Plymouth breakwater. It is near the better known Vixen Tor.
Hen Tor - SX 594653. This tor has an enormous amount of granite clitter surrounding it..
Hey Tor - SX 758771. This distinctive tor is regularly used by climbers. It can be seen from many miles around and also from ships out at sea. Hey probably derives from High.

One of the granite piles of Hookney Tor - SX 699813
Hound Tor - SX 742790. The walkway up to the "inner citadel". This tor is very close to the road and is very popular with visitors.
Hound Tor SX 629890 - not the famous one associated with the Hound of the Baskervilles. Hundetorre is one of the points mentioned in the great Dartmoor boundary perambulation of 1240. Probably got nothing whatsover to do with dogs.
Huccaby Tor - SX 656739. One of the 4 piles. Near here there used to be popular annual pony races that were even attended by royalty. The races stopped before WW2.
Hunter's Tor - SX 761825.
Kes Tor - SX 665862. Near Chagford, near the road and is well visited by many people.
King Tor at SX 710815 with Meldon Hill in the distance.
Laughter Tor. Laughter probably derives from the old Dartmoor word lough which means to pile into mounds (eg. loughing peat turves).
Leather Tor - SX 563700. There is a superb view over Burrator reservoir from the other side of this tor.
Legis Tor - (SX 571655). On the SW side of the moor.
Leigh Tor - SX 711714
Lints Tor (SX 580875) with the misty background of Kneeset. An isolated tor stuck in the West Okement valley of north Dartmoor.
Littaford Tor (SX 616771) and the view to the south towards Princetown.

Little Mistor - SX 564764.
Longaford Tor (SX 615778). This distinctive tor lies near Postbridge.
Lowery Tor - SX 555696. Strangely, this substantial granite tor is not shown on OS maps. There's a lot of clitter on the hillside below. Burrator Reservoir is in the middle distance with Sheeps Tor on the left.
Lydford Tor (SX 599781)
Lynch Tor (SX 565807) with Standon Down behind on the left.
Mel Tor - SX 694725. This is a very accessible tor from the road. Great views too.
Middle Tor - SX 669859. Maybe not one of Dartmoor's better known tors, it is near Kes Tor on Chagford Common.
Nat Tor - SX 545823. Despite the down named after it this is not one of Dartmoor's most impressive tors.
North Hessary Tor (SX 578743). This tor is just underneath the huge TV mast that provides a distinct landmark for the moor. The views from this 517m tor are extensive.
Oke Tor - SX 612900 and 466m high.
Pil Tor (SX 735760). This tor is surprisingly extensive and is an excellent example of an avenue tor. Very easy to get to.
Pu Tor - the south west view looking towards Cornwall - SX 532735. An impressive tor that you can easily walk to.
Rippon Tor (SX 746756). In the distance is one of the cairns.
Rival Tor (SX 642881) with Fernworthy Forest on the horizon and Gidleigh Common between. Rival Tor is surprisingly easy to get to. There are splendid views over the common.
Roos Tor (SX 543766).
Rough Tor (SX 606798). This tor is true to its name. The ground gets very rough near here as the tor marks the edge of the northern fen.
Rundlestone Tor (SX 576746). A smallish tor on the northern flank of North Hessary. There are some good views over the northern moor from here.
Scorhill Tor (SX 658872) with Kes Tor on the skyline.
Shapley Tor (SX 699821) is an extended tor with a number of blocks scattered over the common. It lacks a real focal point. This is one of the main blocks.
Sharp Tor and its main pinnacle - SX 551848
Sharp Tor - SX 686730 - the steep easterly side. There's clouds rolling up from the southern moor.
Shilstone Tor - SX 659902. Not one of Dartmoor's most impressive tors but near to the road and a useful place to meet up at.
Sittaford Tor and some of its low lying rocks - SX 633831. There's a lot of protective fence work around this well visited tor.
A Sourton Tor at SX 543899. An extensive range of outcrops. This is not made of granite but consists of the finer grained dolerite.
South Hessary Tor - SX 597723. Due south of Princetown. This is one of the boundary points of the forest of Dartmoor. There's an iron spike on top of the tor with an inscribed head "FB" - Forest Boundary.

Thornworthy Tor - SX 665851. This tor overlooks Fernworthy Forest
Top Tor (SX 736763)
Vixen Tor - SX 542742. This is where an old witch called Vixana apparently lived. Her job was to lure the unwary into the nearby bog. Unfortunately, this tor is in private land and access is now restricted.
Wacka Tor's undemonstrative rocks (SX 662622) just west of Hickley plain. Wacka Tor covers a large area, but the rocks are hardly imposing.
Watern Tor (SX 629869) is a strangely eroded tor on the eastern side of the North Moor. This is the part called the Thurlstone.
West Mill Tor (SX 587910). A splendid tor with solid Cyclopean masonry.
Wild Tor at SX 622877 - with Cosdon in the background. Wild Tor is very extensive with lots of outcrops and some pretty stunning views.
Wind Tor - SX 708758.
Winter Tor - SX 610916. On the skyline you can see Yes Tor (left) and West Mill Tor (right).
